Dutch-Style

Our Process:

This sustainable, bottom cultured farming method has been used in Holland for hundreds of years. It begins with gathering seed that sets naturally in the wild.

Bottom cultured means transferring natural seed from managed seed areas and re-planting it on an aquaculture site. One that has been carefully picked for the optimum water current, the right bottom and depth, that will bring the maximum amount of food to the mussels.

They grow for about 2 ½ years until they are market size. Our specialized shallow-draft harvesting vessel, The Stewardship, brings the mussels up from the bottom. Our custom-built box drag allows us to harvest the mussels without ever touching the seabed.

Once harvested they are washed, graded for size, de-bearded and purged of any sand. As seasoned shellfish farmers in Maine we understand artisanal and sustainable production.
